In the last two seasons, the Golden Plains Bulldogs girls basketball team had run through their regular seasons unbeaten before stubbing their toes in the sub-state final, one step away from state. This year, Parker Christensen’s group was determined to change that, and they did, reaching the state semifinals in Class 1A-II.
The Bulldogs won all 20 of their regular season games, and as the sub-state hosts, they had loud and proud crowds behind them as they defeated Cheylin and St. Francis in the sub-state to earn the tenth state tournament trip in program history.
On Monday, Golden Plains hosted state quarterfinal action against Dighton. The Bulldogs sprinted to an early lead and never relented, defeating the Hornets 57-45 behind 20 points from Ashley Stoll and 17 points from Kassie Miller. The win moved the Bulldogs into the Final Four for the third time ever and sent them to the Kirkman Activities Center at Barton Community College in Great Bend for the 1A-II semifinals.
Waiting for the Bulldogs in Great Bend were the perennially powerful Central Plains Oilers, winners of six straight state championships from 2014-19. Golden Plains was up for the challenge early, staying neck-and-neck with the Oilers throughout the first half thanks to hot three-point shooting from Brooke Stoll. Ultimately, the experience and pedigree of the Oilers won out, as they pulled away in the second half to send the Bulldogs to a 50-39 defeat.
Twin sisters Ashley and Brooke Stoll led the Bulldogs with 14 and 12 points, respectively, in the loss. Those two were the only seniors on this year’s Bulldogs squad, and a program that has gone 70-3 over the last three years will return several experienced players next year to make another run at the school’s first state championship in girls basketball.
