Furloughs possible if state budget not passed

andy lambertJune 1, 2015

The Kansas Budget Director claims if state lawmakers don’t pass a budget by Sunday all non-essential state workers will be immediately furloughed, and agencies have already come up with plans to handle that. State legislators are currently meeting 11 days past the traditional end of their session and have yet to agree on a package of tax and budget policies to fill an estimated $406 million shortfall for next fiscal year.

Meanwhile the revenue secretary told state senators the governor will veto proposals to increase taxes on business. The shortfall started when lawmakers cut income taxes, including one policy that allowed 281,000 business owners and 53,000 farmers to avoid income taxes on their profits.
