Fire At Fertilizer Plant Prompts Evacuations – and more in the Today In Kansas Report

Fire officials give the all-clear after a fire at a biofuels plant at Minneola forced people living nearby to evacuate their homes. The fire at the EGE plant was contained to the plant after about four hours. Nobody was hurt. The Kansas Department of Agriculture says the plant manufactures additives for fertilizer that are designed to keep it from drifting into the air.

A 17-year old faces possible first-degree murder and other charges after a man was found dead in a mobile home park in McPherson. The KBI has joined the investigation as well. It’s unclear what led up to the shooting.

Kris Kobach says he won’t moderate his tone and style if he wins the GOP nomination for governor. The comments came at a forum presented by the Kansas Chamber of Commerce. The gathering touched on other issues, including a possible constitutional amendment to bypass the state’s judiciary on public school spending and immigration policies. That proposal has significant support from conservative Republicans.

The latest survey from AAA finds Kansas is one of only eight states with higher gas prices this week than a week ago. The average price of regular unleaded climbed 2 cents to $2.73 a gallon. That’s still the 10th cheapest gas in the nation. California has the priciest fuel, while South Carolina has the cheapest.

A celebration of life for a 5-year-old Wichita boy whose body was found months after he disappeared will be open to the public. The boy’s family says the memorial service will be June 30 at 1 p.m. at Wichita State’s Eugene Hughes Metropolitan Complex.
