A Georgia man pleads guilty in a fraud scheme that cost Sedgwick County more than $566,000. That man accepted a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to wire fraud. In October, Sedgwick County received an email from someone claiming to be from Cornejo and Sons asking the county to send payments to a new bank account. The county sent about $566,000 to that man’s account instead.
Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran faces tough questions during a town hall meeting mostly about health care in his home county. Critics of Republican efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act packed Moran’s town hall meeting in Palco. Moran says he opposes the bill drafted by GOP leaders in the Senate, which drew some applause.
Former state Rep. Jan Pauls has died at the age of 64. The Elliott Mortuary says Pauls, of Hutchinson, died at St. Francis Select Specialty Hospital. Pauls, a former judge and attorney, served in the Kansas Legislature beginning in 1991. She represented the 102nd district as a Democrat until switching to the Republican party in 2014 to advocate for conservative social issues.
A man from California is accused of having more than 60 pounds of the synthetic opioid fentanyl during a traffic stop in Russell County. He appeared in court yesterday, and faces a minimum of 10 years in federal prison and up to $10 million in fines on the possession with intent to distribute charge.
