According to AP reports from Kansas City, Missouri, the family of the woman who died in the Sherman County Jail Wednesday is raising questions about her death.

Fifty-eight-year-old Brenda Sewell of Kansas City died Wednesday at Goodland Regional Medical Center from what Goodland authorities deemed “medical distress.” accident

The following statement was issued from the Sherman County Sheriff’s Department on Jan. 22:

“On the 22nd of January 2014 EMS was summoned to the Sherman County Bastille for an inmate in medical distress. Upon arrival they transported the prisoner, Brenda Sewell 58 year old female from Kansas City Missouri, to Goodland Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.  At this time as is typical in cases like this the investigation was immediately turned over to an outside agency. Currently the Goodland Police Department is investigating and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been notified. The prisoner was arrested on the 20th of January 2014 by the Kansas Highway Patrol.  No further comments will be made pending the results of autopsy and outside investigation.”

Sewell and her sister, Joy Biggs, were pulled over Jan. 20 for speeding by the Kansas Highway Patrol. Relatives said that a trooper arrested the sisters after finding a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle.

The family said Sewell, who had numerous medical problems, became ill in the jail on Tuesday and was hospitalized before returning to jail on Wednesday. The family said the jail personnel did not give Sewell her medications because they could not identify the pills. She died later that day in the hospital.

The investigation is being handled by the Goodland Police Department. The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office nor the Goodland Police will be commenting until the investigation is complete and autopsy results are in.
