GOODLAND, KS — There is plenty of optimism amongst the Goodland Cowgirl Volleyball team as they enter into the 2019 season and a with a strong group of senior leaders and talented freshman class how could you doubt it.
Head Coach Angie Brumbaugh enters her fifth season at the helm of GHS Volleyball and after great first season back in 2015, when the Cowgirls went to the state tournament, Goodland has struggled to find the win column the previous 3 years going a combined 16-97. Last season saw the Cowgirls show some improvement winning as many games (8) as they did combined in the 2017 & 2016 seasons.
2019 brings lots of excitement led by their vocal seniors in Lauren Cure, Taighe Weeter & Rachel Wittman. Cure is going into her fourth year of varsity and was named second team All-GWAC last season. Wittman was named to the honorable mention All-GWAC team last season. And Weeter looks to make the transition from the outside to becoming more of a defensive specialist.
Another big reason for 2019 being a much improved season in the incoming freshman class which not only features some good athletes but also some size, which is something GHS has been lacking for the past few seasons.
“We have a group out here who has been invested for several years, even the freshman that are coming in,” said Brumbaugh. “Girls are buying into the program and pushing themselves and it’s making the program better as a whole.”
It’ll also be quite the family affair this year on the team as three sets of siblings could very well play with each other. The Cure sisters, Lauren & Lindsey. The Lehman sisters of Emma & Olivia and the Weeter sisters of Taighe and Talexa.
Goodland opens up its 2019 season in St. Francis with a Triangular against Sainty & Hoxie.
