COLBY, Kan. — On the first day of fall practice, Colby Volleyball Head Coach Jerry McKee welcomed 41 girls into the gym. An incredible turnout that Coach McKee said will really drive up the competition level as the weeks goes on.
The Eagles return a solid group of role players that will shoulder some of the heavier loads in matches. Senior and two-time all-league player Hallie Vaughn, as well as seniors Kailey Shields and Kaitlyn Nelson will lead the charge for Colby this season. Coach McKee commended their leadership abilities in practice at the beginning of the week, helping to acclimate and encourage underclassmen teammates. The seniors will also count on all-league honorable mention Kennedy Stanley, a junior, to step in to a larger role this season.
Coming off a 23-14 season and a first round sub-state exit a season ago, this year’s focus will be on improving fundamentally and trying to take a step deeper into post season. The Eagles were slated in the Phillipsburg bracket last season, which boasted seven teams with 20 or more wins. A loaded sub-state where, in the words of Coach McKee, his team held their own.
Colby will be tested early this season, taking on a challenging field in their opening tournament in Hays. The Eagles will open against Salina South, Bucklin and Hays-TMP in their half of the bracket. On the other side, league foe Scott City, Wheatland, Hays and new 6A school Olathe West will round out the field. The variety of classification levels in the tournament is a big plus according to Coach McKee.
As the team turns to league play, they will be well prepared for the trials of GWAC competition. With the team being unsure of where they will be shipped for sub-state play, Caoch McKee says that league play is a great way to prepare for post season play, having so many of their 3A opponents in the conference.
Colby will begin play Saturday, August 31st at the Hays Tournament before returning to open up the home slate on September 5th against both Oakley and Hays-TMP. Stay tuned for updates on the team’s progress all season long right here on NWKSradio.com.
