COLBY, Kan. — Heading into his 15th season as the Head Coach of the Colby High School Girls Golf team, Rick Williams has a lot to be excited about. With a 4th place mark at the 3-2-1A State tournament in Emporia, the Eagles finished their 2018 campaign with their best result in school history. This season’s roster boasts 12 student-athletes, the most ever under coach Williams, with four returning Varsity athletes.
One way to do that is by developing young talent and building off of it. This season, nine of Colby’s 12 participants are underclassmen, a quality that Williams says is great for the team’s future. Of those three upperclassmen, Brielle Bange (12) and Lacy Weigel (11) return with state tournament experience. Bange paced the Eagles with a 13th place finish in Emporia a season ago, while Weigel placed 31st.
Two other Colby golfers return with state experience under their belts. Mya Betz (10) and Makenna Husband (10) both come into their second varsity seasons with reasons for optimism, looking to make a return to 3-2-1A state in October.
“The top three finishers at state get a trophy, so a big goal for us is to try and break through and win one,” said Coach Williams.
With a core group coming back for the Eagles this season, they’ll be tested early and often. Defending 3-2-1A state champions Syracuse, and runner-up Goodland, a league rival, will be teams the Eagles see on a weekly basis.
Most of Colby’s league opponents will be present at almost each tournament throughout the year, creating an opportunity for competitive development throughout the season.
“We see a lot of good golf out here and if we can compete out in this area, then we go to the state tournament, we’re in good position,” said Williams.
Although the competition throughout the season will be tough, the team focus won’t be on comparison to the field as much as it will be on individual progress.
Coach Williams and the Eagles will get their season underway at the Cimmaron Golf Club on September 3rd. Stay tuned for updates on the team’s progress throughout the year right here on NWKSradio.com.
