Last season was a kind of a building year for Goodland Cross Country and head coach Jake Stout but 2020 looks to be a season where you could see GHS runners make a jump.
Last year, the season came to an end with no runners qualifying for the state meet even though the Cowboy’s, then senior, Trent Coon was just four seconds from making the cut and now sophomore, Noah Schears was just 34 seconds from going to state as a freshman.
This year Coach Stout, in his 4th year, is very excited to have a full girls team after not having one in his previous three seasons and the return the fore-mentioned Schears for sure. Stout is not for sure if either of his teams will qualify for state as teams but he does think he could have a couple individuals make it this season.
The main reason for optimism this mostly has to do with the great summer the team had. Led by Noah Schears on the guys and Claire Scheopner on the girls team, each got a lot of work in over the summer. Schears running close to ten miles a day and Scheopner running close to that as well. Plus, Coach Stout did his own running camp and really got some good work in with them over the summer.
Stout has some high expectations for his team very young team here early in the season.
“I hope they can post up some times they didn’t know that they could do,” Stout said.
As for how he sees his team competing this season Stout thinks that his boys team can improve in the regionals from the bottom tier to the middle tier of teams. As for the girls Stout thinks that after not having great numbers the previous few years that they can have a shot at going to state.
Goodland will start its season at home on September 3rd.
