FALL PREVIEW: Goodland Football

Ross VolkmerAugust 30, 2019

GOODLAND, KS — After four straight years of winning three games each season from 2014 to 2017 the Goodland Cowboys only won one game last season, doing something that hadn’t been done since before 2004.

Entering into 2019 the Cowboys kind of find themselves in the same spot as when they were going into the 2018 season, with multiple unknowns, but still with less than less year.

“We have a lot of guys who have played some football but we also have some guys who have not played a whole lot at all,” said third year head coach Chase Topliff.

GHS has to replace four of five starters on the offense line and more than likely with a handful of undersized guys.  Cowboys look to be very young at the running back spot as well with all four guys vying for the job being sophomores or younger.

There are some bright spots and it starts under center with junior signal-caller Leyton Cure who started every game last season and will be relied upon heavily both passing and running. Other skill guys such as wide receivers Blake Sanderson & Henry Cole as well as tight end Mason Murray played a lot last season and will be asked to make more plays this year.

Defensively, the Cowboys are going to have to “adapt” as coach Topliff called it, switching their base defense once again to now a 3-3-5 defense due to lack of D-linemen and an abundance of secondary players.

“We are going to try and be dynamic out of it,” said Topliff. “ We’ve really really stressed this year (forcing) turnovers. We need to create fumbles, we need some interceptions and we got to get some big stops.

Both coaches and players think that the team has practiced the best it has in years and hopes that will translate to more wins on the fields.

Cowboys open the 2019 season on the road at Holcomb, a team they played twice and lost to both times last year.  Play-by-play coverage of the Goodland Cowboy football season can be heard on 102.5 U-Rock with Ross Volkmer & Bill Biermann.
