FALL PREVIEW: Goodland Football

Ross VolkmerSeptember 4, 2020

With a three year starter at quarterback, decent returning experience up front and solid depth at the playmaking positions the Goodland Cowboy football team is looking to do something that hasn’t been done since 2013, make the postseason.  Goodland football has been in a lull ever since 2013, not winning more than three games in any season. And the past three years GHS has struggled to win more than one game per season totaling just four wins in the Chase Topliff era.

This year Goodland brings back nine seniors including quarterback Leyton Cure and do-it-all player Mason Murray as well as a couple of big guys up front.  16 of 18 kids are back for GHS that made a start for the Cowboys last year which is quite an improvement over two years ago when their were a lot of new faces in new places.  But in the scheme of things Goodland will still be young with a lot of Sophomores and even a couple of Freshman contributing.

“We’re excited about the makeup of our team and one of the big benefits for us this year is that we have more depth than we have had in the past,” Coach Topliff said.  More depth not only will help the Cowboys with the rigors of a season but help push other guys to be better.

But the biggest question mark for the Cowboys for the past couple of years has been the play in the trenches, which will be key again her in 2020 but Coach Topliff thinks that area of his team has improved.

“We told our big guys that if we want to take the next step as a team, it starts and ends with you guys.  A lot of guys accepted that and they had great summers for us,” said Topliff.

One of the more fascinating storylines for Goodland this year has been he schedule which has seen two Colorado teams get taken off due to COVID-19 and replaced by 6A Liberal and Bridgeport, Nebraska in weeks one and two respectively.  Goodland will also face two teams they haven’t ever faced in Smokey Valley & Southeast Saline as well as a team they haven’t met since 2011 in Lakin. GHS will also only have three road games this season.

Goodland will open up their season on September 4th at Cowboy Stadium hosting the Liberal Redskins for senior night.
