Eagles Rally Falls Short in Sub-State First Round Loss

Dan LuceroMarch 2, 2021

The first, third, and fourth quarters contested between Colby and Norton in Norton on Tuesday night were as close as could be. It was the second quarter that doomed Colby, and ultimately ended their season.

Norton outscored the Eagles 17-5 in the second frame and never trailed again in a 70-59 win in their 3A sub-state first round contest.

Colby jumped out to an early five-point lead, but a 9-3 Norton run pulled them ahead for the first time at 12-10. Jacob Wetter beat the first-quarter buzzer with a mid-range jumper to tie the score at 12. The second quarter was all Blue Jays, as they scored the first five points to take the lead for good and closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 29-17 lead into the locker room.

Back-to-back baskets to start the third quarter got Colby within eight points at 29-21, but Norton responded with a five-point possession on a made three, a foul away from the ball called on the release, and a lay-up off the ensuing out of bounds play, and Colby would get no closer the rest of the night.

The Eagles trailed 41-29 after three and fell behind by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter, but they were persistent in their comeback efforts. Their 30 points in the fourth quarter were a season high for a single quarter, and Ryan Myers nailed three threes in scoring 13 of his 16 points in the frame. But Norton kept Colby at arm’s length with proficient free throw shooting, knocking down 21 of their 28 charity tosses to seal the victory.

Hunter Vaughn poured in a season-high 20 points for Colby to lead three scorers in double figures. Peyton Wahlmeier scored 17 points and Myers added his 16. Ryan Schrum’s 22 points showed the way for the Blue Jays.

Colby’s season ends with a record of 9-12.
