The Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles return to the hardwood tonight at the Colby Community Building, playing host to Liberal in the season opener for both schools.
The Lady Eagles finished 17-4 last season, with a 7-3 record in the Great West Activities Conference. They must replace last year’s leading scorers, Hallie Vaughn and Jill Stephens. Two returning starters are back for the Lady Eagles, led by junior point guard Brooklyn Jones, a two-year starter, who averaged 10 points per contest last year. Senior forward Kennedy Stanley also returns. Jones and Stanley were honorable mention all-league selections last season. They face a Liberal team that finished 23-0 and in the 6A State Final Four last season, but lost a pair of Division I players from that roster to graduation. Senior point guard Ashley Carillo and senior post Aubrey Warden lead the charge for Liberal.
Colby’s boys made a trip to Hutchinson for the 3A state tournament last year, falling to Wichita Collegiate in the first round to finish with a 16-8 record (7-3 in the GWAC). Three starters and two of the three leading scorers from last season are back for the Eagles. Senior guard Ryan Myers averaged over 12 points per game last season, and senior post Peyton Wahlmeier averaged 9.5 points and earned second-team All-GWAC honors. Sophomore guard Hunter Vaughn started 11 games as a freshman and returns, along with senior guard Jaren Rush (six starts). Their opponents from Liberal finished 8-13 last season and return starters Alex Lopez and AJ Ramirez.
The girls game is scheduled for a 6pm start with the boys to follow. Tune in for the action on 100.3 The Ride or on the Rocking M Media app, and watch a live stream of the game with our broadcast audio at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b966jv0Glp8.
