Eagles, Lady Eagles Victorious in First Orange & Black Games

Dan LuceroJanuary 21, 2021

The Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles each rode stifling defense and balanced scoring to first-game wins at the 36th Annual Orange & Black Classic on Thursday night at the Community Building.

The Lady Eagles used a dominant third quarter to pull away from Beloit, 47-26, in first-round bracket play, while the Eagle boys wore down Osborne 44-28 in their first of two pool play contests.

Colby’s girls seized the lead in a back-and-forth first quarter, and a Mackenzie Dodson three-pointer gave the Lady Eagles an 11-7 lead after one. Beloit used a 6-0 run to tie the score at 13 midway through the second, but Emma Curry scored the final five points of the half to give the Lady Eagles the 18-13 edge at the break. The third quarter was all Colby, as they outscored Beloit 17-4 and built a 35-17 advantage. The fourth quarter was a mere formality, with Colby leading by as many as 22 on their way to a second straight win of 20-plus points.

Curry and Brooklyn Jones each scored 16 points to lead the way for Colby, with Kennedy Stanley adding eight points. Porsche Cooper’s eight points led the way for the Lady Trojans.

Hear the postgame remarks from Lady Eagles head coach Tom Stephens:

The Lady Eagles improve to 5-4 with the win, while Beloit falls to 0-5. Colby will play Garden City in semifinal action on Friday night at 6:30 at the Community Building.

The Colby boys never trailed after a scrappy first quarter that saw them take a 9-8 lead. The Eagles dominated the second quarter, going on an 8-0 run and outscoring the Bulldogs 15-5 in the frame to lead at the intermission 24-13. The third quarter was more of the same, with the Eagles preventing Osborne from making a run. Hunter Vaughn hit a pair of threes in the third to help Colby build a 19-point lead, 38-19. Colby would lead by as many as 22 in the fourth and eased to the win.

Peyton Wahlmeier’s 11 points were tops for a balanced Eagle scoring attack. Vaughn and Ryan Myers added nine points each and Jacob Wetter chipped in a season-high eight points. Grady Wolters’ 15 points paced the Bulldogs.

Hear the postgame comments from Eagles head coach Parker McKee:

The Eagles are 5-4 after the win while Osborne drops to 5-4. Colby plays Beloit in the last of three pool play games Friday night at 8:15 at the Community Building, with the winner finishing in first place in pool play and advancing to the championship game.
