Eagles, Lady Eagles Send Seniors, Community Building Out in Style With Wins Over Cimarron

The Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles wrapped up the home portion of their 2020-21 schedule and drew the curtain on the beloved Colby Community Building with a pair of victories over the Cimarron Blue Jays on Friday night.

The Lady Eagles posted a season-high in points in a 65-52 win, while the Colby boys started fast and held on late for a 57-54 triumph.

It looked like the girls game would be a rout from the start as Colby took leads of 10-0, 19-2, and 26-4 in the first quarter. Cimarron battled back with an 11-0 second quarter run to get as close as 10 points, and the Lady Eagles led by 11, 37-26, at the half. A 6-0 run got the Lady Blue Jays within five at 40-35 in the third, but Colby closed that frame on a 7-0 burst of their own and led 49-37 going into the fourth. The Lady Eagles kept Cimarron at arm’s length the rest of the way as they eased to their third straight victory.

All five starters scored at least six points, and three scored in double-figures; Brooklyn Jones had 22 points, Emma Curry scored 16, and Kennedy Stanley added 12. McKayla Miller’s 22 points led Cimarron in the loss.

Colby’s boys also started fast, leaping out to a 10-2 lead and taking their first double-digit lead at 19-8 to end the first quarter. Cimarron trimmed a 13-point deficit to two with an 11-0 run midway through the second quarter, but Colby pushed the advantage back to five points at 29-24 by the intermission. The Blue Jays started the third quarter with six straight points to take their first lead of the game at 30-29. Colby responded with a 6-0 run late in the frame to break a 36-all tie, and the Eagles led 42-39 at the end of three quarters. A 6-0 Eagles run gave them a 50-42 lead midway through the final quarter, but Cimarron got to within one on three separate occasions before a pair of Hunter Vaughn free throws in the final seconds gave Colby the three-point lead for good. Cimarron missed two three-point tries at the end, with the second one blocked as time expired.

Four Eagles scored in double-figures, led by Ryan Myers’ 18 points. Peyton Wahlmeier scored 12 points, Jacob Wetter posted a season-high 11 points, and Vaughn chipped in with 10. Andrew Ridenour and Braxton Harrison scored 15 points each to pace the Blue Jays.
