Eagles, Lady Eagles Drop Season Openers to Liberal

Dan LuceroDecember 6, 2020

The Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles began their 2020-21 basketball seasons with tough tests as class 6A Liberal came to the Community Building. Though both Eagle squads were shorthanded, they battled to the end before succumbing. The Lady Eagles fell 41-30 and the Eagle boys were 49-47 losers in overtime.

Without two-year starting point guard Brooklyn Jones, the Lady Eagles had their hands full with a Liberal squad that has gone 68-3 over the past three seasons. But it was Colby who had the better of the early exchanges, with Kennedy Stanley leading the Lady Eagles to a six-point first-quarter advantage. Colby led 12-8 after eight minutes but the second quarter belonged to Liberal point guard Ashley Carillo, who scored all 14 of her team’s points in the frame as the Lady Red took a 22-19 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was a low-scoring grind, with Colby mustering just five points but holding Liberal to six and staying within 28-24. The Lady Eagles got within 28-26 in the fourth quarter but that would be as close as they would get as Liberal guard Hailey Contreras drilled three three-pointers as part of an 11-point quarter for her. The visitors closed the game on a 7-2 run for the eleven-point win.

Stanley was the lone Lady Eagle in double-figures, scoring 14 points. Mackenzie Dodson added seven points in the losing effort. Carillo’s 15 points led Liberal in the win.

In the boys game, hot early shooting from Liberal pushed them to a six-point first quarter lead but Ryan Myers beat the quarter buzzer with a three-pointer to bring Colby within 12-10. The Eagles proceeded to dominate the second quarter, starting on an 8-0 run and holding Liberal to two total points in the quarter to take a 19-14 lead at the break.

Colby kept the visitors at bay in the third quarter, with Liberal able to get within a point twice but Colby maintaining the lead 30-27 at the end of the frame. The Eagles led by four, 40-36, with just under two minutes to play, but the offense went quiet down the stretch and Liberal’s AJ Ramirez scored to tie the game at 40 in the final minute. Liberal had three chances to win the game in regulation but a jump shot and two tip-tries missed, sending the game to overtime.

Peyton Wahlmeier gave Colby a 42-40 lead early in the extra session, but Liberal would score the next six points and led by four before Myers hit a three with 56 seconds left to bring the Eagles back within one. Liberal missed a pair of free throws but got the offensive rebound and scored on the second chance, and a late free throw bumped their lead to four points. Shane Puckett’s layup beat the buzzer but only served to make the final margin of defeat closer.

Three Eagles scored in double figures, with Myers pouring in 15, Hunter Vaughn scoring 12, and Wahlmeier adding 11. Embry Williams scored 15 points and Alex Lopez chipped in 12 for Liberal.
