Eagles, Lady Eagles Defeated in Dodge City

Dan LuceroJanuary 9, 2021

The Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles resumed their 2020-21 seasons on the hardwood with a visit to Dodge City to take on the Class 6A Red Demons and Lady Demons on Friday night. Though both Colby teams started brightly, they were both worn down by a barrage of three-pointers and suffered defeat, with the Lady Eagles falling 62-37 and the Eagle boys losing by a 69-47 score.

The girls contest saw Colby take a 12-10 lead after one quarter thanks to sharp offense and early production from Brooklyn Jones and Kennedy Stanley. But the unbeaten Lady Demons soon showed why they’re a top-10 team in the class 6A rankings, as they scored 33 of the game’s next 35 points. The Lady Demons outscored Colby 23-2 in the second quarter to lead 33-14 at halftime and then went on a 10-0 run to start the second half. Dodge City led by as many as 30 in the fourth quarter, meaning a chunk of the final frame was played in the mercy clock rule.

Jones and Stanley were the only players to score from the field for Colby on the night. Jones put up a season-high 26 points and Stanley joined her in double figures with 10 points. Kisa Unruh scored 17 points for Dodge City and made five of her team’s 11 three-pointers.

In the boys game, the two teams traded baskets throughout a competitive first half, with Peyton Wahlmeier’s 14 first-half points helping the Eagles stay even with the Red Demons, 27-27, at the intermission. The second half was a completely different game, as Colby began to struggle with turnovers and couldn’t keep pace with Dodge City’s hot shooting. The Red Demons outscored Colby 15-6 in the third quarter, and pulled away in the fourth for the 22-point final margin of victory.

Wahlmeier finished with 17 points to lead the Eagles, and Ryan Myers chipped in with 16 points. Cooper Scheck knocked down five of his team’s 13 three-pointers and scored 18 points to lead Dodge City’s scoring effort.
