Eagles, Lady Eagles Blow Out Beavers

Dan LuceroFebruary 18, 2021

The Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles each got to coast to victories on Thursday night at the Scott Community Events Center, a welcome respite from a difficult stretch of the schedule.

Colby’s boys snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 66-40 rout of the Beavers, while the Lady Eagles ran away with a 53-31 victory.

The girls contest was a closely-fought affair through the first quarter, with the lead changing hands six times and the two teams tied at 12 at the end of eight minutes. Colby began to take command of the game with an 11-2 run to push their lead as large as nine points, taking a 27-19 lead into the locker room. A 12-2 Colby run late in the third quarter moved the lead into double-figures for the first time, and the Lady Eagles led 45-28 after three. The fourth quarter was academic, with Colby stifling Scott City’s offense and increasing their advantage to 22 points by the end of the night.

Three Lady Eagles scored in double-figures; Brooklyn Jones led the way with 24 points, Emma Curry scored 11, and Mackenzie Dodson pitched in with 10. Erika Felker and Brooke Strine scored 10 each to lead Scott City, who saw their three-game winning streak halted.

Hear the postgame comments from Lady Eagles head coach Tom Stephens:

The Colby boys fell behind briefly early, but went on an 8-0 run midway through the first quarter that gave them the lead for good and proceeded to take out some of the frustrations of the last month on the Beavers. Colby led 18-10 after one and led by 13, 34-21, at the half after a Hunter Vaughn three-point play with two seconds left in the half. Scott City got within nine at 34-25 with an early third-quarter push, but Colby responded with a 17-4 run to close out the quarter, capped by a Ryan Myers three that beat the buzzer and gave the Eagles a 51-29 lead. An 8-0 fourth quarter run buried the Beavers and allowed the Eagles to clear their bench and enjoy their first win since January 22.

Myers was tops on the night with 22 points for the Eagles. Vaughn poured in a dozen points, and both Jaren Rush (11) and Jacob Wetter (9) scored season-high figures. Lawson Bailey and Blaine Culp led the Beavers with seven apiece.

Hear the postgame comments from Eagles head coach Parker McKee:

The Colby girls are now 10-8 overall and 2-2 in the GWAC while the Scott City girls dropped to 5-13 and 2-2 in the league. The Eagle boys are 7-11 and 2-2 in GWAC play, while the Beaver boys are 4-14 and 0-4 in league action.

Colby has a short turnaround before the regular season home finale Friday night against Cimarron.
