Eagles Earn Hoops Sweep in Ulysses

Dan LuceroJanuary 16, 2021

In the first Great West Activities Conference games of their seasons, the Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles came out victorious.

The Lady Eagles stifled the Ulysses Lady Tigers 45-20 and the Eagles held off the Tiger boys 63-57 in Ulysses on Friday night.

There were no lead changes in the girls contest, as Colby leapt out to an 11-0 first-quarter advantage and never looked back. They pushed the lead to as many as 16 points in the first half and led 20-7 at the intermission. The third quarter was Colby’s best of the night as they scored 18 points and stretched the lead to 38-12, and they led by as many as 27 in the final frame as they eased to the win. The 20 points allowed is the fewest the Lady Eagles have allowed so far this season, and the 25-point win their largest margin of victory.

Brooklyn Jones led three Lady Eagles in double figures with 14 points. Emma Curry added 13 points and Kennedy Stanley scored 11 points. Jocelin Baeza scored 7 points to lead Ulysses.

Colby’s boys got off to a similarly fast start as the girls, scoring the game’s first seven points and leading by eight in the first quarter before Ulysses settled in and cut the advantage after one quarter to 15-13. A 9-3 run to start the second quarter gave the Tigers their largest lead of the night at 22-18 before Colby pulled back even and took the lead at 26-24 with an Ian Rosales buzzer-beater from the baseline to end the second quarter. The Eagles went on a 9-0 burst to snap a 30-30 tie in the third quarter to take their largest lead of the contest and led by seven, 46-39, after three, but the Tigers found their range from behind the arc in the fourth quarter. Ben Scott’s three-point play gave the Tigers a 55-53 lead with 3:30 left, but the Eagles got back-to-back hoops from Peyton Wahlmeier and Ryan Myers on their next two possessions and Colby finished the game on a 10-2 run to overtake the Tigers for the six-point victory.

Wahlmeier’s 23 points, a season-high, led the Eagles in the win. Myers added 20 points and Hunter Vaughn was in double-figures for a second straight game with 11 points. Ryan Nightengale scored 20 points to lead Ulysses, who was without the services of leading scorer Aaron Galindo due to injury.

The Eagles return to the court for first-round games in the Orange & Black tournament at the Community Building this Thursday night. The Colby girls battle Beloit in bracket play, and the boys take on Osborne in their first round-robin game.
