Eagles Advance to Orange & Black Championship Game; Lady Eagles Fall in OT Thriller

Dan LuceroJanuary 22, 2021

For just the third time in the 36-year history of the Orange & Black Classic, the Colby Eagle boys will play in the championship game.

The Eagles topped Beloit 55-41 in the pool play finale on Friday night at the Community Building to go 2-0 in the pool and move into Saturday’s championship game. The Colby Lady Eagles will play for third place on Saturday after they lost an overtime thriller to Garden City, 54-53.

Colby’s girls set the tone of their game with three-point shooting, with a Brooklyn Jones three beating the first quarter buzzer and giving them an 11-8 lead after one quarter. The Lady Eagles extended their lead to 23-19 at the half and then knocked down five three-pointers in the third quarter to take a 39-30 lead. But Garden City ended the third with five straight points, and then scored the first eight points of the fourth to take a 43-39 lead. As time wound down, errant free throw shooting kept the door ajar for Colby, and they took advantage, with a driving layup by Jones with four seconds left tying the score at 45 and sending the game to overtime. But Garden City scored the first four points of the extra session and never looked back. Keyhana Turner’s free throw with seven seconds left iced the game, and made Jones’ buzzer-beater from downtown meaningless to the final result.

Jones poured in 24 points to lead all scorers for Colby, with Mackenzie Dodson adding 12 points. The Lady Buffs were led by Turner’s 18 points, and also got 15 points from Amaya Gallegos and 11 from Aileen Becerril.

Hear the postgame comments from Lady Eagles head coach Tom Stephens:

Colby drops to 5-5 on the season with the loss. They’ll play Ulysses in the third-place game at 2:30 at the high school on Saturday. Garden City improves to 6-1 and they will take on Goodland in the championship game at 4:00 at the Community Building.

The Eagle boys were in full control of their game against Beloit from the jump, never trailing and taking the lead for good at 5-2 on a Ryan Myers three in the first quarter. Myers scored 12 first-quarter points in leading Colby to a 16-11 lead. The Eagles finished the first half on a 12-0 run and led 32-17 at the break. Colby led by a 38-27 margin after three and never let Beloit get closer than nine points in the final quarter, leading by as many as 18 points on their way to their third straight victory.

Myers led all scorers with 26 points for the Eagles, with Hunter Vaughn joining him in double figures with 15 points, a new season-high. Owen Eilert’s 20 points paced Beloit.

Hear the postgame comments from Eagles head coach Parker McKee:

With the win, Colby improves to 6-4 and reaches the Orange & Black championship game for the first time since 1999, when they lost to F.L. Schlagle. Colby has never won the tournament that they host. They will face the top-ranked team in class 5A, the Hays Indians, at 6:00 at the Community Building. Beloit falls to 2-5 and will face Garden City in the third place game.
