The governor signs a disaster declaration for 29 counties impacted by heavy rain, flooding, and winter storms at the end of April. Federal and state damage assessments are starting this week to determine if there’s enough damage to warrant a federal disaster declaration.
A committee in the Kansas Senate approves a bill repealing that tax break for business owners and farmers that had been championed by Governor Brownback. The legislation is expected to generate $256 million in revenue over two years, less than a third of the projected budget shortfall.
A judge reinstates bond with conditions for WaKeeney police chief Terry Eberle. He’s facing a number of charges and is being ordered not to have contact with witnesses in the case other than his son and that includes staying away from the police station. In a special session Monday night the city council opted not to pay Eberle’s legal fees.
The Cherokee County sheriff looks for two people who knew a man who was found dead along a road near Baxter Springs. The death has been labeled suspicious, and authorities want to talk to a woman who’d dated that man, as well as the woman’s son. All three are believed to be homeless.
A traffic crash on K-23 south of Gove sends a woman to the hospital. Her SUV ran off the road, into a ditch, hit the entrance of a field and went airborne before landing on its front bumper. That woman did have a seatbelt on at the time.
