GOODLAND, KS — Make it now six straight wins for the Goodland Cowgirls softball as they defeated the Lakin Broncs on Thursday afternoon. 7-2 in game one and 21-10 in game number two in just 5 innings.
Goodland bats were patient and somewhat opportunistic in game one as they were walked 12 times by Lakin starter Makennah Hernandez. GHS only managed four hits in the contest but made two of them count as Jessi Duell & Atalee Amthor used their hit to drive in five of the seven runs.
Brooke Livengood pitched well again throwing a complete game two-hitter. Livengood only allowed two runs and just one of them was earned in the win. She also struck out seven but did walk five.
Game two turned out to look more like a football score than a softball one as Goodland pulled away late to win. Cowgirls hitters struggled to time up Lakin starter Izzy Ortiz early on and the Broncs took advantage scoring two runs in the top of the first and the second innings. Goodland would, for the most part, keep pace with Lakin tying the game up at four in the bottom of the second before exploding for eight runs in the third & seven runs in the fifth.
Jessi Duell continued her strong day driving in four runs on three hits. Brooke Livengood drove in two and scored three times. Freshman Eve Cole drove in three and also scored twice. Plus Makayla Wolak had a three hit performance, including a double, scoring three times & driving in two.
Anna Gutierrez earned the win in the circle going five frames allowing ten runs but only five of them were earned. She also walked three and struck out three. She also allowed a two-run home run to Makennah Hernandez.
With the wins Goodland gets back to .500 on the season at 8-8 overall. They host Cimarron on Friday for two looking to push the winning streak to eight in a row.
