GOODLAND, KS — Both Goodland basketball teams resumed regular season play and were handed loses on Friday night by the Norton Bluejays.
Lady Jays 44 Cowgirls 23
The Cowgirls knew they were going to have their hands full hosting the seventh ranked team in 3A. Especially since Norton had three ladies over 5-10 and the Cowgirls only have one. Goodland kept it close initially only being down six at the end of the first quarter.
But after that Norton would start to slowly pull away thanks to second chance opportunities and would lead 23-11 at halftime and push that lead to 16 before the end of the third period. GHS could only muster four points in the final quarter as they fell 44-23.
Goodland’s Taighe Weeter was the only Cowgirl to score more than one basket as she led GHS with 12 points. Norton got a game-high 17 points & 7 rebounds from Taryn Kuhn.
The loss puts Goodland now at 3-9 overall while Norton improved to 12-1 with the win.
Bluejays 39 Cowboys 33
The Goodland Cowboys were felling optimistic about their chances heading into the game against Norton and it show from the get go. GHS jumped out to an early 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter but would only manage to score five points in the second and would trail the Jays by four at halftime.
GHS came out of the locker room and did something to Norton that has happened to them, holding the Bluejays to zero third quarter points while scoring ten of their own to lead 28-22 going into the fourth. But the problem that has plagued Goodland all season reared it ugly head in the fourth as the Cowboys committed nine turnovers in the quarter alone which led to Norton to scoring 17 points in the quarter and ultimately leading to a 39-33 Goodland loss.
Goodland senior’s Chase Johnson & Mark Rodriguez play some of their best basketball of the season to led GHS. Johnson had a career-high 12 points while Rodriguez had a game high 13 points. Norton was led by Kade Melvin who had 12 points and Carter Jones who finished with 11.
Goodland remains winless with a 0-11 record. With the victory Norton got their record back to .500 at 7-7.
