GOODLAND, KS — The Goodland softball team opened up the 2019 season with a pair of losses to the Hays Indians Thursday afternoon at Centennial Park. Goodland (0-2) lost game one 14-0 and then fell in the second game, 18-2. Both game ending in five innings.
In game one, Goodland could just not get the bats going only mustering two hits, both from senior Taitum Ketter, while striking out eight times. Goodland only had three players make it on base the entire game. Brook Livengood, making her first start of the season , pitched the entire five innings giving up 14 runs on ten hits while allowing two home runs to take the loss. Both homers came from the Indians Madelyn Waddell who was the star of game one going three for five with five RBI’s & three runs scored.
Game two GHS got off to a somewhat better start, after getting down four to zero in the top of the first, the Cowgirls would answer with their first runs of the season. Shay Smith drove in Jessi Duell in the first and then Katelyn Fraizer scored on a dropped third strike to make it 4-2 going into the third where Hays would then pull away with six runs in the third & fourth innings followed up by two more in the 5th to win 18-2. Taitum Ketter had two hits again. Shay Smith with one for two with an RBI & Jessi Duell with one for three with a run scored. Anna Gutierrez took the loss going three innings giving up ten runs on eight hits. Hays (2-0) was led in game two by Cassidy Prough & Macee Altman who each drove in three runs and each scored three times in the contest.
Cowgirls will host Cimarron next Friday while Hays heads to Abilene on that same day.
