GOODLAND, KS — It was a rollercoaster day of games Friday as the Goodland Cowgirl softball team earned a split with Hays TMP at Ray Dye Field.
In game one Goodland’s offense came out firing scoring five runs in the first two innings to lead 5-1. But from that point on it was all TMP, scoring five runs in the third to take the lead and then four more insurance runs in the fifth & sixth innings. Goodland’s offense struggled after taking the early lead only collecting three more hits the rest of the way in the 10-5 loss.
Anna Gutierrez led the way for Goodland both offensively & defensively amassing three hits and two RBI on offense while also pitching a complete game on 94 pitches to take the loss. Atalee Amthor had two hits, an RBI & a run scored. Haley Biermann scored twice and drove in two as well.
TMP starting pitcher Kyleigh Allen settled in nicely after allowing the five early runs (only one was earned) to strikeout ten in seven innings of work. Sophia Coulter powered the Monarch offense with three hits, four runs scored & five RBI including a two-run home run.
Game two was a lot like the first game but just flipped as Hays TMP scored the first eight runs to lead 8-0 going into the bottom of the third. Goodland, who had only two hits in the first two innings exploded for four runs in the third & then six more in the fourth on doubles from Grace Riedesel & Anna Gutierrez to lead 10-8.
Cowgirls added three more runs over the next two frames to lead 13-8. TMP would tighten the game up on a pair of home runs from Kyleigh Allen & Alexis Ryersee but GHS would hold on to win 13-11.
Gutierrez had another three hit game for GHS in game two and got the win in relief of Jaxi Mitchek, striking out six. Mitchek, Riedesel & Haley Blochlinger each had a pair of RBI to led the Cowgirl offense.
TMP’s Kyleigh Allen took the loss in game two after throwing 182 pitches over the double header allowing ten runs on nine hits. Monarchs also had five different ladies with two RBI.
The win for Goodland ended a ten game losing streak to TMP and improved them to 10-5 on the season. Hays TMP is now 6-6.
Goodland will return to GWAC league play on Monday at Holcomb. TMP will host Plainville on Tuesday.
