KINGMAN, Kan — The Goodland football team had not handled long road trips all season and it proved true once again on Friday night as the Cowboys fell to Kingman 40-6 in the final game of the 2019 season.
Going into the game neither team had a chance to advance their season and both knew their season would be over after the contest. It was going to be the type of game that the team that wanted to be there and play like it was a playoff game was more than likely gong to get a win.
Kingman won the toss, took the ball and never looked back scoring on drives of 11 and 16 plays on back-to-back possessions, capping them both off by two touchdowns by Hayden Albright.
Meanwhile the Goodland offense, which had struggled for the past few games after lighting it up against Concordia three weeks ago, struggled again punting three out of four first half possessions with the other possession ending in an interception.
Kingman found the end zone two more times before half and would lead 26-0 at the midway point in the game. Doing it both through the air and on the ground staying quite balanced. Goodland on the other hand barely had any yards to speak of with just 21 total yards, 20 through the air.
The second half looked a lot like the first half with the Eagles scoring twice in the third quarter. One coming from an Albright 30 yard run, his third of the night, and the other a Jaxson Reid three yard touchdown run extending their lead to 40-0.
Goodland would find in the end zone with just over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Leyton Cure capped off a six play 79-yard drive with a 3 yard touchdown run to get the Cowboys on the board. That score was set up by a couple of strong Bryson Water runs and a long 42 yards pass to Sergio Lazo which set GHS inside the five.
After that both teams played a majority of their junior varsity squads and the game would end with Kingman dominating Goodland 40-6.
Goodland was held to 163 total yards of offense with 153 passing and just 30 rushing. Leyton Cure 76 total yards and a touchdown. Bryson Waters ran for a tough 44 yards and seven different receivers had a catch on the night.
Kingman had a huge night offensively with just under 400 total yards. Hayden Albright ran for 106 yards and three scores. Jaxson Reid threw for 193 yards and touchdown to Dalton Freund. Both Freund and Reid each ran for a score as well in the victory.
The win for Kingman evened the all-time series between the two teams at two games a piece and ended a two game winning streak for Goodland in the series.
The loss for Goodland ended their season with a 1-8 overall record for the second straight season. Kingman, also for the second straight year, end their year with a 3-6 record.
