Cowboys Season Comes To An End, Colby Advances

LAKIN, KS– The Goodland Cowboys baseball season came to an end on Monday afternoon as they fell in the first round of the 3A Lakin Regional to Scott City, 4-2.

Goodland bats were kept silent all day as GHS was held to just one hit by Scott City starter Kevin Herman. Herman went the distance allowing two runs and striking out 11 Cowboys and had a no-hitter through four innings.

Goodland’s lone runs came from senior Gabe Biermann who walked twice and score both times he reached. GHS’s lone hit came from senior Wence Hendrich in the bottom of the 5th on a grounder to short which drove in Biermann and to cut Scott City’s lead in half, 4-2.

Goodland’s defense did not help their cause as they committed five errors and all of Scott’s runs were unearned.

Reliever Marcus Cardona took the loss allowing four unearned runs in two and two-thirds innings worked.

Goodland ends there 2018 season with a record of 11-10 overall, and 6-4 in GWAC which was good enough for 3rd in the league. Scott City advances to play top-seed Hays TMP on Wednesday.

As for Colby, they made quick work of their first round opponent in Southwestern Heights, shutting out the Mustangs 11-0 in five innings.

Catcher Tucker Branum drove in two while fellow junior Kyler Britt drove in three as CHS piled up all 11 runs in the first three frames. Pitchers Zach Hart & Mason Wright combined to give up just three hits to SW Heights while striking out seven.

The Eagles (13-8, 7-3) advance into the semifinals and will take on number-two seed Lakin on Wednesday.
