Cowboys Lose At Beloit 46-12

BELOIT, Kan — Missed opportunities, turnovers, penalties and lack of ability to stop the run all added up to the Goodland Cowboy football team falling to the Beloit Trojans 46-12 on Friday Night at Trojan Field.

The opening drive couldn’t have gone much better for Beloit as they marched down the field in 11 plays, ten of them runs, and punched it in with a two yard Carson Cox touchdown. And that would set the tone for most of the first half for the Trojans as they would score on four of their first five offensive possessions. Goodland’s lack of size in the trenches really showed as they allowed 163 rushing yards in the first half.

The Cowboy offense showed flashes at times in the first half but unfortunately could not capitalize enough. Goodland’s second drive of the game went for over 70 yards and 14 plays but ended in a backwards pass fumble which Beloit took back to the Goodland 17 yard line.  But the following offensive opportunity for GHS resulted in points as Leyton Cure found Sergio Lazo for a 48 yards touchdown pass capping a five play 80 yard drive.  It was the first touchdown of Lazo’s career and Cure’s fifth of the season.

But that drive would one of the few bright spots in the game for Goodland who found themselves down 30-6 at halftime despite putting up 166 total yards, 156 through the air.

The second half turned out to be quite a stalemate. Goodland’s first half passing success was slowed by better coverage and pressure from the Trojans defensive line.  And four of Beloit’s six second half possessions ended in turnover on downs do in part to bad shotgun snaps.

Still both teams would find the end zone at least once in the second half. Beloit would score twice once thru the air and another on the ground, both scores getting credited to running back Grant Arasmith. Goodland’s touchdown came from freshman Mason Hernandez who found the end zone for the first time in his career with a 2 yard touchdown run. That score was set up by a 56 yard reception by Hernandez.

Goodland ended the night with 247 total yards, 230 through the air but had four turnovers. Three of them were interceptions. Both Sergio Lazo and Mason Hernandez each had career nights. Lazo with four receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown, while Hernandez had 96 yards receiving and a rushing touchdown.

Beloit’s two main backs in Grant Arasmith & Carson Cox ran for 241 yards and three scores. Vinny Paulen had 46 yards receiving and a score and Arasmith also had a receiving touchdown. Trojans ended the night with 348 total yards, 272 of it on the ground.

The loss dropped Goodland to 1-4 overall & 0-2 in district play. The win improved the Beloit to 3-2 overall & 1-1 in the district. Cowboys will return home to host Concordia for homecoming on Friday while the Trojans head to Scott City.
