HUGOTON, KS — The losing streak was pushed to ten straight for the Goodland Cowboys baseball team on Tuesday afternoon falling to the Hugoton Eagles in both games on their double-header. GHS lost game one 7-1 and then fell in game two 10-2.
In game one Goodland got down two nothing after the first inning but starter Ryan Volk would go one to pitch a shut out over the next three frames. Chase Johnson would drive in DJ Knox, the lone Goodland run, in the top of the first to cut the Eagle lead to just one but Hugoton would explode for five runs in the bottom half of the inning to put them out of reach on their way to victory.
Goodland bats continued to be no-shows are they were only able to get one hit thanks to Johnson’s RBI. Other than that, GHS was struck-out 11 times in the game, nine of those K’s credited to Hugoton starter Jayce Korf. Despite a rough inning of work from Trevor Daise, Cowboy pitch threw well only walking three while striking out three.
Game two started out a lot like the first as Hugoton got an early one nothing lead. Goodland would answer in the top of the third to tie it at one thanks to Trevor Daise scoring from second on a Hugoton error. But the Eagles would have another big inning coming up at bottom of the third piling on seven runs due in part to five walks issued by Cowboy pitching.
After scoring another run in the top of the fourth thanks to a Ryan Volk RBI hitting in Chase Johnson the Cowboys would not be able to push across another run and Hugoton would tack on two more insurance runs to seal the win and the sweep. Freshman Walker Eslinger saved GHS pitching being able to get the Cowboys to the finish line with three and a third innings of work and keep arms available to games later in the week. Goodland bats continued to struggle only getting four hits in the loss.
Cowboys have lost ten in a row to fall to 3-13 on the year and have not won since April 4th when they swept Syracuse. GHS finishes GWAC play 1-9 with their lone win coming against Holcomb. Goodland will host Hays TMP on Thursday and then Cimarron on Friday. Hugoton has won five in a row and finished GWAC play 5-5 and on the year sits at 9-9 overall.
