SCOTT CITY, KS — The Goodland Cowboy baseball team struggled with the bats again and were swept for the first time in GWAC league action falling to the Scott City Beavers 10-0 & 15-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
Coming into the double-header Goodland had really been struggling with their bats and unfortunately for GHS, that trend continued.
For the second consecutive series game one saw the Cowboys get shut out. GHS managed just four hits over the course of six frames, all singles and were struck out eight times. Only two of those singles left the infield. Cole Linton accounted for two of the three hits. Goodland loaded the bases three times in the first four innings but came away with nothing to show for it.
Meanwhile, Linton on the mound battled but was touched up for 8 runs, but only two were earn as GHS committed five errors. Linton also struck out seven in four and a third inning to take the loss.
Scott City was led by Harrison King at the dish with two hits, two runs & four RBI. JP Harrris earned the win.
Game two Goodland got down again but was able to tie the game up in the third as Brock Mull & Manny Gonzales each came into score. But Scott City answered the tie ballgame with ten runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the fourth to end the game in the fifth inning.
Goodland was held to just three hits in the second game but two of the hits were good for extra bases. The struggles on defense continued into game two as well as GHS had four errors. Manny Gonzalez had his toughest outing of the season surrounding 11 earned runs on six hits. He also walked seven batters in a losing effort.
Harrison King was big again in game two with two hits (one an inside-the-park homer), three runs & three RBI. Jeffrey Nix also had three RBI. Blaine Culp added two RBI as did Easton Lorg for SCHS. Lorg got the win on the mound despite only working into the third inning allowing both runs & three this.
The losses dropped Goodland back to .500 at 6-6 overall & 4-4 in GWAC games. Scott City remained on the top in the GWAC & in the regional standing improving to 13-1 overall & 9-1 in league play with the wins.
Goodland will return home to host Ulysses on Friday in a make up series while. Scott City remains home to host Ellis on Friday.
