GOODLAND, Kan — For the second straight game the Goodland Cowboys played well; for a half.
The Cowboys did what they needed to do versus the Ulysses Tigers in order to pick up their first win of the 2019 season in half number one but didn’t do it in half number two and went on to lose by a final of 49-12.
If the Cowboys were going to have a chance in this game they were going to have to slow down the Ulysses rushing attack and they did. GHS only allowed 125 total yards in the first half to Ulysses and only saw the Tigers score twice. One drive starting at the Cowboy 17 yard line.
The Goodland offense was also clicking in the first half as Leyton Cure totaled 155 total yards, including a 24 yard TD pass to Henry Cole late in the first quarter. It was Cole’s first touchdown of this career and would go on to have a career night with three receptions for 79 yards and that score.
Unfortunately for the Cowboy faithful the good vibes only lasted until halftime where GHS trailed 14-6. After half the Tigers made a few changes and Cowboys could not get out of their own way. Penalties and turnovers were drive killers in the second half and they were not able to get a first down until the fourth quarter.
Ulysses on the other hand took advantage of short fields and Goodland mistakes to score on four of their first six drives in the second half and would pull away winning the game quite handily.
The Tigers ended up with 293 total yards of offense, 260 of it on the ground and only completing one pass for 33 yards. Running back Nick Holmes led the charge with 118 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jett Moyer also had two rushing scores.
Goodland finished with 261 yards, 197 of it through the air. Leyton Cure came up just three yards short of 200 yards passing with two passing TD’s. Mason Murray had four receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown, while Mason Hernandez led the team in receptions with seven for 35 yards out of the backfield.
Ulysses has now won two in a row over Goodland after Goodland won both meetings in 2016 & 2017. Up next the Cowboys (0-2) will host 2-0 Scott City while the (1-1) Tigers are at 0-2 Hugoton.
