SYRACUSE, KS — The Goodland Cowboy baseball team played well in all phases on their way to a series sweep of Syracuse 22-2 in four innings & 17-1 in five innings on Thursday in Syracuse.
Game one Goodland jump out to a 5-0 lead as all nine batters came to the plate in first inning and then tacked on another five runs in the second with, once again, all nine batters making it to the play. Goodland would lead 11-0 before Syracuse would finally plate a pair of runs during due to walks & errors by the Cowboys. Syracuse pitching struggled to get outs in the fourth and that resulted in Goodland scoring 11 runs to push their lead to 20. Brock Mull would allow the lone hit of the game by Syracuse to Joe Mitchell in the bottom of the fourth but it wouldn’t amount to anything as Goodland would win 22-2.
Gentry Deeds & Walker Eslinger each had a pair of hits and drove in three powering the Cowboy offense. Byson Water & Mason Hernandez each drove in two and were two of five guys who scored three runs in the game. Hernandez got the win on the mound allowing 2 runs but not giving up a hit to earn his first W of the season.
Game two started very similarly to game one with once again Goodland put up a five spot in the first inning. GHS would add two more runs in each of the next three innings to lead 11-0 before Syracuse would get their first run in the bottom of the fourth. GHS added another six runs mostly due to multiple errors committed by the Bulldogs. Syracuse didn’t do anything in their half of the first and the game was over with a final of 17-1.
Manny Gonzalez, in his first varsity baseball start, was spectacular working all five innings allowing just two hits and one unearned run while striking out a career high nine to get the win. The bottom half of the lineup did the most damage for GHS in game two led by Trevor Daise & Octavio Gonzalez who each had pair of hits with Daise driving in two. Gentry Deeds scored three times and made multiple great defensive plays at third in the win as well.
Cowboys improved to 5-3 overall with the sweep and went 3-1 on the week with their lone loss coming to Hugoton on Tuesday. Syracuse dropped to 2-6 on the season. Goodland will have a mini-pause in the season before playing their next game on April 20th against Ulysses.
