Hot Country 97.9, KWGB, a radio station operated by Rocking M Radio, hosted their local Country Showdown competition Wednesday night at the Thomas County Fairgrounds. Six contestants from Kansas and Nebraska competed for an opportunity to advance to the Kansas State Finals of the Country Showdown next week in Goodland.
Colby native Brock Wagoner emerged as the winner. Wagoner, 22, performed two original songs: “Lovin’ You” and “Spirit of a Warrior,” a song that he wrote for his late grandmother Lou Kersenbrock.
The Country Showdown is the nation’s largest country music talent competition that has jump-started the careers of many successful artists. Martina McBride, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks and Sara Evans are all past competitors. Performers compete at 4 levels: local, state, regionals and nationals (held at the famous Ryman Auditorium in Nashville). The overall winner of the Showdown earns a $100,000 recording contract.
