Colby Volleyball Stays Undefeated in KJCAA Play

COLBY, Kan. — For the first time in 2019, the Colby Community College Volleyball Team lost a set in conference play.

Last night, Coach Carey Jones and the Trojans played host to KJCAA rival Hutchinson Community College, and were punched directly in the mouth.

The Blue Dragons took advantage of some early mistakes by Colby, specifically on the serving end. In the match, Colby amassed 15 service errors, a mark that will make any coach pull their hair out, but those service errors directly correlated to the 25-21 Hutch win in the opening frame.

From there, the Trojans woke up.

Karleeann Ramos lead the charge for Colby, posting 15 kills on just 6 errors for a kill percentage of .257.

Ramos struggled early in the match, but improved as the match went on, providing high-energy plays routinely, and letting out loud screams of enthusiasm when the ball hit the floor on the other side. Her teammates, who clearly fed off of her energy, used Ramos’ success to build momentum of their own all over the floor.

Macarena Ruiz tabbed 15 kills of her own on 9 errors, providing a vital second attack for the Trojans to rely on when the Blue Dragons keyed in on Ramos.

Colby’s versatility proved tough to stop, as they evened the match at one set apiece after winning 25-19 in set two.

From there, it was all Trojans.

“We made an effort to cut down our errors,” said Assistant Coach Shelby Mosier postgame. “We also needed to have a little more energy as a team because this was our toughest test in conference play so far.”

In set three, Colby dominated in every facet, capturing a 25-7 win and seized all the momentum with it.

Setter Kyndal Bacon totaled 38 assists in the match, right on par with her 9.28 assist per set average. The Sophomore has been named the KJCAA Setter of the Week multiple times already this season, and put in a bid for yet another accolade last night.

The Trojans handled business in set four 25-19, thanks to a late run and captured the match 3-1 overall.

Colby improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while Hutchinson fell to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the KJCAA.

Colby will now get a rare weekend off before playing host to Barton on Monday night, September 23rd. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. inside of the Colby Community Building.
