Colby Swept at Hugoton in GWAC Battle of Eagles

Dan LuceroFebruary 6, 2021

The Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles headed south to take on Hugoton on Friday night, and while Colby’s squads competed admirably, they were unable to match the offensive firepower of two of the Great West Activities Conference’s best teams.

A dominant third quarter propelled Hugoton’s girls to a 56-41 win over Colby, while the Hugoton boys withstood Colby’s fourth-quarter rally to win, 72-56.

Colby had the better of the early exchanges in the girls game, going on a 7-0 run to take a 16-8 first quarter lead thanks to four made three-pointers, including two from Emma Curry. Hugoton answered with a 7-0 run of their own and took their first lead of the game late in the first half. They would take a 27-25 lead into halftime and then control the third quarter, outscoring Colby 16-5 out of the locker room to lead 43-30 after three. Colby could get no closer than 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Brooklyn Jones’ 16 points led the way for Colby in the loss. Curry joined Jones in double figures with 10 points. Three Hugoton girls scored in double figures, led by 16 points from Mikyn Hamlin.

Hear the postgame comments from Lady Eagles head coach Tom Stephens:

After a slow, controlled start to the boys game, Hugoton erupted for a 7-0 run to take the lead for good midway through the first quarter. Colby trailed by five, 17-12, after one, and in the second closed to within 19-16 before a 9-0 spurt gave Hugoton a double-digit lead. Hugoton led 31-20 at the break. The hosts would outscore Colby 26-14 in the third quarter, taking a 57-34 lead into the final frame. But Colby had a rally in them, starting the fourth quarter on a 15-4 run. Ryan Myers scored all nine of his points in the fourth, and a Myers free throw cut the Hugoton lead as low as 10, 65-55, with about two minutes to play, but Hugoton scored on their next two possessions to ease to their eleventh straight win.

Peyton Wahlmeier had another big game for Colby, scoring 21 points to lead the team. Hunter Vaughn added 11 for Colby. Five different Hugoton players finished in double figures, topped by Sawyer Harper’s 18 points.

Hear the postgame comments from Eagles head coach Parker McKee:

Colby’s girls dropped to 8-7 with the defeat, and are 1-1 in GWAC play. Colby’s boys suffered their fifth straight loss and are now 6-9, 1-1 in the GWAC. Hugoton’s girls, ranked #3 in class 3A by the KBCA, remained unbeaten at 13-0 and 2-0 in the GWAC. Hugoton’s boys are 11-2 and 2-0 in GWAC play.

Colby returns to action on Tuesday night at the Community Building as they welcome Goodland for a pair of GWAC contests.
