For the first time ever, the Colby Lady Eagles golf team can claim an individual state champion.
Freshman Anna Starbuck shot a two-day score of fourteen over par (77-81-156) at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney to pace the field by seven strokes and claim the 3-2-1A individual title. Starbuck’s play also lifted Colby to a second place team finish, their best in school history.
Starbuck was joined in the top 10 by teammate Brinley Sims. The sophomore shot 95-90-185 to finish eighth. Junior Mya Betz (102-92-194) finished in a tie for eighteenth. Senior Lacy Weigel and junior Jaylyn Sabatka shot matching two-day totals of 200 to round out the scores for the Lady Eagles. Colby’s team score of 735 was 22 strokes behind state champions St. Mary’s Colgan and 44 strokes clear of the rest of the field. Fellow GWAC member Cimarron took home the bronze shooting a combined 779.
Goodland, who won state last year and lost four of its top five golfers, finished in 9th place in the team standings shooting a 920 over the two days.
Jazlyn Fenner was the Cowgirls top golfer for the tournament shooting a 224. Jenitsabeth Garza was GHS’ top golfer after the first day but didn’t compete on the second day. Allyson Sheldon shot a 226. Ashtin McClung shot a 232 & Ariane McCary shot a 261 over the two rounds.
