Colby Boys Third, Girls Fifth at Topside Tip-Off

Dan LuceroDecember 14, 2020

The Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles basketball teams both emerged from this past weekend’s Topside Tip-Off tournament in Goodland with a pair of wins, moving their records to 2-2 on the season. The girls rebounded from a first round loss to take fifth while the boys earned a third-place finish.

On Thursday night, the Lady Eagles had the tough task of slowing down Class 4A #3 Nickerson and their star sophomore center Ava Jones. Though long-distance shooting helped Colby stay close throughout the game, Jones would not be denied, scoring 32 points to lead the Lady Panthers to a 55-46 win. Colby got 10 points apiece from four of their five starters; Mackenzie Dodson, Brooklyn Jones, Kennedy Stanley and Emma Curry.

The girls rebounded the next night to earn their first win of the season in the consolation semifinal, holding off a late charge from Lakin in a 61-50 win. Colby led by as many as 17 in the first half before Lakin rallied to tie the score at 48 midway through the fourth quarter. Brooklyn Jones’ three-point play sparked a 7-0 Lady Eagle run to retake the lead for good. Jones’ 19 points and Curry’s 15 led Colby in the victory.

In the fifth-place game, Colby used a 20-2 fourth-quarter run to pull away from McCook (NE) in a 54-31 win. Jones and Curry once again led the offensive efforts, both scoring 18 points, while the defense held the Lady Bison to just 13 points over the game’s final three quarters.

Listen to Lady Eagles head coach Tom Stephens’ thoughts after the win over McCook Saturday:

The Colby boys opened tournament play with a 49-30 throttling of Nickerson on Thursday night. The Eagles held the Panthers scoreless for the first 13:03 of the game and led by as many as 22 on their way to their first win of the season. Ryan Myers dropped four three-pointers in a 17-point performance.

The semifinal round brought a rematch of last year’s sub-state championship game against Lakin. This time it was the Broncs coming out on top, as the Eagles could not muster a fourth-quarter rally and fell 61-48. Peyton Wahlmeier scored 15 points to lead Colby in the losing effort, with Ryan Myers adding 13 of his own.

In the third-place game, Colby trailed Goodland by 11 points late in the third quarter before embarking on a 15-0 run that spanned the end of the third and the start of the fourth, never looking back on en route to a 58-46 triumph. Ryan Myers (19 points) and Wahlmeier (13) once again led the Colby scoring attack, but Hunter Vaughn was just as critical, scoring all 12 of his points in the second half and sparking Colby’s big run.

Listen to Eagles head coach Parker McKee’s postgame comments after Saturday’s game:

Ryan Myers, Peyton Wahlmeier and Brooklyn Jones earned All-Tournament honors for Colby.

The Eagles and Lady Eagles open GWAC play Tuesday night at Holcomb.
