Prosectuors file a number of charges against the WaKeeney police chief. Terry Eberle faces suspicion of blackmail, harassment by telecommunications device, attempted interference with law enforcement, tampering with a public record, and witness intimidation counts. He’s free on his own-recognizance after being arrested by the KBI and making his first court appearance yesterday.
Kansas legislators hope to make progress before the weekend on increased spending for public schools. A House committee on school finance spent yesterday discussing a plan to phase in a $750 million increase in aid to schools over five years. Chairman and Olathe Republican Larry Campbell hopes to have a committee vote tomorrow.
The Kansas Supreme Court considers for a second time whether to spare two brothers from being executed for four murders in Wichita in December 2000. The justices, hearing arguments today in the cases of Jonathan and Reginald Carr. The Kansas court overturned the death sentences in 2014, but the U.S. Supreme Court reversed those decisions in last year to force another review of the cases.
Participants in the Kansas winter wheat tour say it is too early to know the full extent of storm damage on the state’s crop. 70 scouts made 222 stops on Tuesday, covering wheat fields from Manhattan to Colby. A statewide crop estimate is expected by tomorrow. In addition to freeze damage in central Kansas, the crop in northwest Kansas suffered from the weekend blizzard and limited disease damage turned up in spots as well.
A man admits to voting in both Texas and Kansas in 2012. As part of his plea deal he has to pay a $1000 fine. It’s the ninth voter fraud conviction secretary of state Kris Kobach has gotten since receiving prosecuting authority on voter fraud cases two years ago.
