Colby Community College Campus Bookstore manager Leisa Hansen has been named the 2016 Colby/Thomas County Chamber of Commerce Community Service Person of the Year.
Every year the Chamber recognizes an individual or organization who gives unselfishly beyond their normal duties and responsibilities to help others.
“Leisa has been an asset to Colby Community College and Thomas County for many years,” said college president Seth Carter. “It is great to see her work and efforts recognized at this level.”
Hansen has served in many capacities for the Genesis–Thomas County Food Bank, including several years on the board. In addition to assisting with normal operations that require donations to be sorted and stocked, she was involved with the summer backpack food program and helped with annual food drives. She has also been responsible for organizing and leading the annual Christmas food baskets project that begins in August and concludes in December.
Hansen is a founding member of the Once a Month Lunch, a free monthly lunch open to anyone in the community. She is involved with the Presbyterian Women’s Church group and has started a “coffee talk” at CCC. She also enjoys playing the piano and has shared that talent at her church.
Hired by the college in 1999 to work in the Campus Bookstore, Hansen is actively involved with students. Each year she and her student staff display an angel tree in the cafeteria to collect gifts for local nursing home residents during the Christmas season. Her family has been a host family to softball players for many years, and she is frequently mentoring students who work in the bookstore.
“All of these acts are done with a positive attitude and a smile on her face, regardless of the situation,” said Chamber member Michelle Ryan during the announcement at the annual banquet. “She truly approaches community projects with heartfelt sincerity and genuine concern for helping others.”
