The Colby Community College equestrian team hosted the first western competition of the season at the CCC Agriculture Center on October 1-2.  Out of six colleges and universities CCC finished as the Reserve High Point team each day behind the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Head coach Shanda Mattix was encouraged at what she saw.

“This is the perfect place for us to start the season and proves that our young team will be a competitive team in our region.”

Sophomore Mikaela Brackney earned enough points to qualify for the Regional Championships hosted by CCC in March. Class winners include captains Lacey Thompson and Jacki Zenger, and freshman Amelia Pitcher.

The outside support provided to host a two-day show did not go unnoticed by Mattix or the team.

“As a hosting school we provide all the horses for competition as IHSA is a ‘catch-ride’ system,” she said. “Because of this, about 20 extra horses were brought in for the weekend. We rely on supporters and alumni to provide horses, warm-up horses, and serve as horse-holders throughout the weekend.”

The next competition for CCC is Oct. 15-16 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the first hunt seat show of the semester.
