U.S. Attorney for Kansas Barry Grissom said the charges against Terry Lee Loewen, an avionics technician at the airport, included an attempt to use a weapon of mass destruction.
According to Grissom, the man had been a target of government surveillance that began earlier this year. According to the Wichita Eagle, he confirmed Loewen had been set up with dummy-explosives in the vehicle. FBI representatives confirmed no passengers or workers were ever in danger.
Kansas Senator Jerry Moran released the following statement on the arrest:
“We are grateful for the law enforcement officials who kept individuals, including many Kansans, safe today. This incident is a reminder that we must remain vigiliant and reaffirm our commitment to protecting this country and its ideals from those who wish to do us harm.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI are scheduled to hold a media briefing from downtown Wichita at some point today.
