According to a press release from the Reno County Sheriff’s Department via their Facebook page, deputies were called to Cheney Lake for a report of a missing person.

When they arrived at the site, they were told by some family members of Sheldon Martin, 31, of Hutchinson, that he was missing.

Family members told authorities Martin had gone to the lake early Sunday morning to canoe. When he had not returned by 5 p.m., the family began to search for him. They found Martin’s vehicle at the lake and called authorities for assistance.

Around 2:30 a.m. this morning, a small canoe was found along the shoreline. At 4 a.m., the bod of Martin was found in that general area wearing a lifejacket.

Deputies are still working to close the case. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death and police said at this time, foul play is not suspected.
