Battle over school funding not over…and other headlines: July 5, 2017

School districts suing Kansas over education funding argue that an increase approved by legislators this year is as much as $1.5 billion short of what’s needed for the next school year. They’re also asking the state Supreme Court to order lawmakers to provide more money by Sept. 1. The new law phases in a $293 million increase in aid to schools over two years. The state contends it is adequate.
Kansas health officials have reported a confirmed case of measles in Butler County. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Butler County Health Department said in a joint news release Tuesday that a number of county health departments will be notifying all identified contacts.
Officials aren’t sure yet what started a house fire in Sylvia, in Reno County. The home was a total loss, despite crews getting control of the fire quickly.
A month-long investigation leads to an arrest in Garden City, where officers found meth, drug paraphernalia, and guns. The man taken into custody is also charged with possession of cocaine.
A man’s body, found at the site of a house fire in Wichita. Authorities have not identified the victim and they haven’t confirmed who owns the home. The body of a large-breed dog also was found with the dead man.
A bald eagle that was rescued earlier this year by Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputies is now back in the wild. It was released yesterday, roughly four months after the bird was spotted at Lake Afton. The eagle was emaciated and struggling to fly.
