An outside firm hired to investigate problems in the Barton County Treasurer’s office uncovers more trouble. The auditor was brought in when it was discovered the books were off by $500,000, and he discovered that if a balance was off at the end of the day, then employees were required to make up the difference out of pocket. That is against the law. The county administrator is promising to get everybody paid back, although he’s not sure how much workers paid or how long that practice went on.
