When you visit with Goodland head volleyball coach Angie Brumbaugh you’d think one of the things that she is really excited about would be that she might have one of her best teams she’s ever had. And even though she is proud of her 2020 squad and the season they have had, she is more proud of the fact that they have found a way to have a season thru a pandemic year.
“Honestly I was just hoping we’d get to senior night or get to play some matches,” said Brumbaugh thinking back to the beginning of the season and all the questions about trying to play thru COVID-19.
Pretty sure her thoughts would mirror those of her fellow coaches around the area and country as area teams are continue to get ready for postseason play beginning with sub-state action coming up here on Saturday the 24th.
Multiple area teams have a good chance of advancing out of the sub-state weekend and playing in one of the new quarterfinal matches. Different from previous years where if a team won its sub-state they would then go to that state tournament the next weekend. In 2020, if a team wins its sub-state it still has one more match to go in order to go to the state tournament. A five set match with the winner advancing with three other teams out of their classification to the state tournament final for a four-team round-robin followed by a four-team tournament to decided the state champion.
All sub-state matches start at 1 CT / 12 MT. Here are the how the brackets shook out for this coming weekend of substate play:
3A @ Scott City: Goodland & Colby
2A in Syracuse & Hill City: Oakley & Hoxie
1A D1 in Stockton: Decatur Community, Rawlins County & Quinter
1A D2 in St. Francis & Dighton: Golden Plains, St. Francis, Wallace County, Weskan, Cheylin, Triplains/Brewster, Wheatland-Grinnell & Greeley County
