The Goodland man facing a voter fraud charge wants it tossed out. His attorney argues that man shouldn’t be prosecuted because Secretary of State Kris Kobach isn’t handling the case personally. He’s accused of voting in Sherman County, Kansas and Yuma County, Colorado, where he owns property.
An 89-year old woman from Leoti is dead after turning into an oil derrick being towed by a Mack truck. She was turning onto K-25 from a county road west of Russell Springs. That woman did not have a seat belt on.
Federal prosecutors will charge an airline passenger whose in-flight outburst led to an unscheduled landing in Wichita Tuesday. American Airlines says the unruly passenger on the Phoenix-to-New York flight remains in custody. Another passenger says a man was threatening to kill people around him on the plane.
Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is defending his appearance at a Washington conference organized by a group labeled as “anti-immigrant” by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The SPLC accuses The Social Contract Press of race-baiting. Kobach says opposing illegal immigration doesn’t mean an organization is anti-immigrant.
The Kansas Board of Regents is soliciting comments from state universities about a proposal to let people have concealed guns on their campuses but not carry the weapons openly. A regents committee has drafted a proposed policy and the full board hopes to vote on it in December. A 2013 state law says adults 21 and older who can carry concealed guns can bring them into public buildings unless those buildings have security measures like metal detectors. The law let universities exempt themselves until July 2017.
Governor Brownback has named the CEO of an international business consulting firm as the next Kansas commerce secretary. Antonio Soave’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Kansas Senate. That man from Overland Park is the CEO of Capistrano Global Advisory Services, which helps businesses with mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures as well as expanding their foreign markets.
