Southeast Kansas Rep. Ed Bideau has died at his home in Chanute a day after the Legislature ended a two-day special session.

The cause of death has not been announced, citing family privacy.

Governor Sam Brownback and Lt. Governor Jeff Colyer issued the following statement on the death of Representative Ed Bideau on Sept. 5, 2013.

“We were greatly saddened today to learn of the death of Representative Ed Bideau.  Ed was a fifth generation Kansan who was committed to the people of this state, to his family and to his faith.  The Lt. Governor and I extend our sincere condolences to his wife Margaret, his children and grandchildren.  We offer our prayers to the entire Bideau family and Ed’s many friends.”

In accordance with Executive Order 10-12, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sun-down through the date of Representative Bideau’s internment.

He was elected county attorney in Neosho County in 1976.

Bideau was an attorney in Chanute and was elected to the House in 2012. Rachel Witten, spokeswoman for the speaker, says Bideau previously served in the House from 1985 to 1988 before leaving office to establish his law practice.
According to his official campaign website, Bideau graduated from Chanute High School and Neosho County Community College. He earned business and law degrees from Washburn University in Topeka.
