40 Area Events Medal At State Track; 3 State Champs

Ross VolkmerMay 26, 2019

WICHITA, KS — It certainly took a lot longer that most had hoped or had anticipated but the KSHSAA State Track and Field Championships finally concluded on Sunday. It was the first time ever the KSHSAA had the event go into Sunday and was due to weather delays all three days, including a small hour one on Sunday.

But when it was all done 40 events from northwest Kansas ended up taking home medals for their efforts. And of the 40, three of them were state champions: Oakley’s 4×800 relay team of Kade Hemmert, Cody Zimmerman, Eric Cain & Wyatt A-bell won the 2A title with a time of 8:23. Colby’s Lara Murdock won the 3A girls 3200 run with a time of 11:56 and Wallace County’s Trevor Medina won the boys 1A 800 with a time of 1:57.

No team won a title but some of the top finishing teams were: Golden Plains girls in 1A taking 15th. Hoxie ladies tied for 17th in 2A & Colby girls placed 14th as a team. Oakley boys placed 12th & Hoxie tied for 19th in 2A. Colby boys placed 21st in 3A and St. Francis placed 12th. But one of the great stories of the weekend was from the Wallace County boys team who placed 6th in 1A with two athletes competing. Trevor Fischer & Trevor Medina combined to bring home five medals (1 Gold, 3 Bronze & and a 5th place) and score 32 points.

Some other interesting facts from the weekend were Wallace County & Oakley schools tied for the most medals won with seven each. And GWAC member Scott City won the 3A boys state title with 101 total team points, setting the state record for most points scored by a singe team.
